As part of the ‘Nostalgia in Grand Place’ series, Oscar Georges and Yo Hes pay tribute to one of the most brilliant figures in jazz saxophone: Cannonball Adderley.
A flamboyant alto saxophonist, heir to bebop yet deeply rooted in the blues and gospel, Julian “Cannonball” Adderley left his mark on the 1950s and 1960s with music that was at once virtuosic, generous and resolutely accessible. A long-time collaborator with Miles Davis on *Kind of Blue* and a charismatic leader of his own bands, he forged a musical language in which the sophistication of modern jazz meets a rare warmth and immediacy.
With tracks that have become classics such as ‘Mercy, Mercy, Mercy’, ‘Work Song’ and ‘Dat Dere’, Adderley forged a unique path — a deeply expressive form of jazz, rooted in the African-American tradition, yet focused on sharing and collective energy.
Through this quartet programme, Oscar Georges and Yo Hes explore this legacy with respect and freedom, recapturing the spirit of a music in which groove, melody and interaction take centre stage.
A return to an era when jazz spoke directly to the heart as much as to the ear.
