Matthieu Van "The Seventh Son" • Raw and Groovin'

Matthieu Van (p, voc) ; Sal La Rocca (b) ; Matthias De Waele (dr)

If there’s one hidden and far too rare talent on the Belgian jazz scene, it’s Matthieu Van. A pianist and multi-instrumentalist brimming with ideas — a true human jukebox when he gets going (and even a reggae drummer in his spare time) — he never stops surprising with his voracious musical appetite.
He’s best known as a pianist whose playing drips with the spirit of the blues, unfolding riffs as naturally as others recite the alphabet.
In his new project The Seventh Son, he revisits the world and unique style of Mose Allison, a Delta bluesman from Mississippi who, despite his white origins, made this music his own, blending it effortlessly with the vocabulary of swing and be-bop.
A sort of alter ego to Matthieu Van, when you think about it.
Here, the trio celebrates the universality of the blues with perfectly grooving music — raw, honest jazz with laid-back accents, where Allison’s ironic lyrics find a modern echo.
